Most important, in order to grasp the essence of the dance and to become a good Uprocker, one must become familiar with the HISTORY of Uprock.

An Uprock Battle is similar to the Bboy Battle. Two opponents or teamates are needed to Battle. However, Rockers dance to the entire song, while Bboys perform to the "Break". Also, Rockers need an opposing individual or group formed in a Apache Line, as to where the Bboy battle is in a circle. The music is the guideline for the execution of Jerks, Burns or Freestyle. Therefore, knowledge of the music is key when Battling. Each Rocker must keep their line formation until they are either "Tapped" to step out by another Rocker or the opponent gives out. A Rocker must execute Jerks, Burns or utilize their most dynamic moves at the Break and dance Freestyle and Burn throughout the rest of the song. Rockers who perform as such create the illusion of a story. This is unlike a Bboy who steps in, Breaks, then steps out for a part of the song. When Rockers are in battle, they may be tapped on the shoulder by another to let the next Rocker Crew member in the battle. He or she steps out and the next Rocker is now in the battle. This is a sign of respect for both Rockers.
